Inception

Over Christmas I watched Inception, a psychological Thriller starring Leonardo DiCaprio and directed by Christopher Nolan. There were no opening subtitles as it began in the a dream, having subtitles would have broken the surrealist feel of the dream. Throughout the movie you were constantly having to remind yourself whether you were in a dream or reality as they travelled in and out of them quite quickly sometimes with you not even noticing till the absurd happened or someone mentioned or realised it. At the end you are also left to your own interpretation as Cobb's(DiCaprio) totem, although it stumbles continues to spin and the movie finishes before we see the result. Whether it slowed down and stopped or kept on spinning. If it kept on spinning that would have meant he was dreaming...but...if it didn't that meant he was in reality.

Although this is a psychological thriller it very different to our psychological crime thriller: DEADLY ENVY, as it is all about dreams and controlling their minds through it rather than someone who is mentally unstable. However it is in some ways similar. An example of this is how Joe (from Deadly Envy) begins to question himself and his mental state when investigating the case, similarly to Cobb in Inception struggling with his mental torment - his late wife Mal who he recreated in his mind and disrupts everything, but in Deadly Envy it's Sarah who disrupts everything for Joe...
